When Should the First Visit With a Pediatrician Happen?
Your newborn’s first visit will typically occur within 2 to 5 days of birth. This visit often happens while you are both still in the hospital.
What happens during the first newborn visit?
During the first visit, your pediatrician will check your baby’s overall health and administer first doses of some immunizations.
What about feeding my newborn?
Your newborn will want to feed every 2 to 3 hours if you are breastfeeding. If you are feeding your newborn formula, your baby will want to feed every 3 to 4 hours.
How much will my newborn sleep?
It’s common for a newborn to sleep at least 16 hours, or most of the day. It’s important to place your baby on their back when sleeping, to help your baby’s breathing. You should also try to rest when your baby sleeps, so you can be refreshed and able to care for your newborn.
What about diaper changes?
Your newborn’s stool will start out black immediately after birth and will change to dark green and then to yellow. This is normal. You don’t need to worry unless your baby’s stool is white or red, because this could be a sign of blood in your baby’s stool.
What about bathing my newborn?
Don’t bathe your newborn too often because it can dry your baby’s skin and cause irritation. Always use mild soap and lukewarm water, making sure to clean the folds of skin, where bacteria can accumulate.
